Basic Knit Stitches

Let's learn how to knit and purl - the two primary knit stitches. Once you master these, you can tackle many beginner projects!

Tutorials from Sheep & Stitch.

Step 1: Cast On

Before we learn the process of creating stitches, we first need to get our yarn set up on our needle. This step is referred to as casting on.

Patterns will be specific in regards to how many loops to cast on. Feel free to cast on as many loops as you see fit for practicing.

Step 2: Create Stitches

Now that you have your loops ready, it's time to pull out your other needle and get to stitching!

We will begin first learning the knit stitch - after all.. it shares a name with the practice itself!

You will repeat this process until you reach your desired length.

Already know how to knit? Ready for another stitch? We will now go through the process of learning to purl.

Again, you will repeat this process until you reach your desired length.

The primary difference between knitting and purling is the location of your working yarn. Remember: When knitting, your working yarn is behind your right needle. When purling, your working yarn is in front of your right needle. You can switch between the two stitches as you work by changing the position of your working yarn. Practice, practice, practice!

Step 3: Cast Off

Once you have reached the desired length of your work, you will now begin to cast off to finish the project and free the yarn from your needles. Follow along below.
