Create Your Own Pattern

Have you been experimenting with your craft and creating something unique? Learn how to write up the details and share your projects with others.

Get Familiar with Abbreviations.

At this point in your crafting journey, you have likely read and followed many patterns for various projects. As you prepare to write your own pattern, be sure you are familiar with the abbreviations used for your respective discipline. You'll use these to describe your process.

Gather the Details.

Patterns typically include a yarn recommendation, as well as hook or needle size. Take photos of your project - it's great if you can show the progress of the pattern with images. Other details to provide for your pattern include skill level/difficulty, gauge, and size(s). You'll then want to write down the process for each row of the pattern, utilizing relevant abbreviations.

Find a Tester.

When you have a draft completed of your pattern, have some friends test it out! Consider this "proofreading." Your testers can provide feedback as to the effectiveness of your instructions and produce further examples of your pattern. This will also determine whether or not your size guide is correct.
