Basic Crochet Stitches

Welcome to the world of crochet! Grab your hooks and learn the basic stitches: single, half-double, double, and triple.

Tutorials from Yarnspirations

Foundation Chain

Before we begin learning the various stitches, we must first create a foundation chain to work into.

(Please refer to our Materials section if you are uncertain what hook size to use for various yarns.)

You will first create a slipknot.

Once your hook is through the slipknot, you will yarn over and pull through. This is one chain. Repeat until you reach your desired length.

Single Crochet

Now that you have your foundation chain, you are ready to learn how to work into it.

Once you have made it all the way down your foundation chain, you will need to turn your work to continue to the next row.

Repeat the process until you reach your desired length. To complete the project, you will fasten off. (Shown at the bottom of this page.)

Half-Double Crochet

Mastered the single crochet? We will move forward to the half-double crochet. Begin with a foundation chain of 11.

Triple/Treble Crochet

The triple, or treble, crochet is very similar to the double crochet, but it adds an extra loop. Begin with a foundation chain of 14.

Fastening Off

Once you have completed the last row of your project, you will want to fasten off to remove your hook. This process is the same regardless of which stitch you have been working with.
